Cisco IOS as DNS Server

I was wondering if Cisco IOS can act as a DNS Server. Can IOS provide basic DNS services or provide DNS forwarding?

I know IOS can provide DHCP services. Can IOS provide basic DNS services as well?

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Cisco IOS as DNS Server

No, I don't think IOS can act as either a DNS server or forwarder.

Re: Cisco IOS as DNS Server

Note that IOS can act as DNS proxy and cache. We use this on our MPLS WAN to limit DNS lookup required to traverse the cloud. Very easy to setup:

ip name-server

ip dns server

Simple as that...clients may now use the IOS router as a DNS server.

Thanks, Mike!

May I ask what version of IOS and what feature set supports the DNS feature? Is it also known as DistributedDirector?

Re: Cisco IOS as DNS Server

According to the Cisco Feature Navigator ( :

DNS Proxy: Act as a DNS server for LAN connected devices, to always have a DNS server address to give to DHCP client regardless if the WAN/VPN DNS server has been learned over IPCP or DHCP already.

It is only currently available on Cisco routers (not Catalyst switches) and only in Limited and Early Deployment IOS trains - not General Deployment.
