If I have 2 routers both connected back to back via serial, both on different ip's, would the other router be classed as directly connected...and if so wouldnt I need any routes in them ?

thanks

Hi Carl,

Th serial interfaces will be known as directly connected interfaces because though they have different ip but will be in same subnet.

But any interface like fast ethernet interface on another router will not be directly cnnected for this router so to reach the fast ethernet subnet you will need a route.

On a single router all the current interfaces and interfaces connected to the existing interfaces will be always known as directly connected interface.

I hope I am clear.

Regards,

Ankur
