Difference between L2 and L3

I have a question. During deployment, which method is preferred, using layer 2 or layer 3. As per best practices I meant.

That's too general question I think ;-)

L2 refers to a network to the entire segment between a L3 domain.

As long as devices belong to the same IP subnet, they are all on the same L2 segment.

L3 is when devices belong to different IP subnets.

For deployment, it depends what kind of deployment you're setting up!

Normally L3 is preferred over L2 because less broadcast and more manageability.

Sometimes L3 is not necessary and you can have L2 (like the access switches connecting end users).

The above are just some comments, but to answer your question correctly, you better provide more details on exactly what are you looking for.

Sid,

Deployment depends on how you want your traffic to be routed across the network with segreggating vlans to spearate a broadcast domain,so if you want to have separate vlans for server lan you can use L2 method of creating vlan and to route the traffic from vlan to vlan you use l3 method in switches called ip routing.
