I have a Cat 5 ethernet cable. Is there a way to find out if this Cat 5 cable has a capability of running 1000 mbits?

Thanks.

Diane,

You could probably get away with using the cat5 patch cord for gigabit connectivity. It is recommended to use cat5e or higher for gigabit connections. If you have a good cable tester you could test the capabilities of the cable.

Hi

Cat5e patch lead is fully capable to run at 1000 mbps. Having said this most patch leads are compliant to Cat5e.

Modern Laptops and PCs comes with onboard Gigabit Eth interface, you will need to connect to a gigabit port on the switch to test it or connect 2 gigabit ports on 2 switches which are not in production LAN.

some intelligent cable testers can also be helpful to test the capability of a patch lead
