health check on cisco device

Normally, how people perform the health check on Cisco device? What kind of command will be use in order to see the error message or log from the console? For example: cisco switch 2950 or 2600?

For switches, try the commands sh post and sh environment alarm.

For routers, look at the logs for the first sign or sometimes you can use sh diag.

A word of caution: When using the sh environment alarm on a 2940/2950 switch, if you don't have RPS but you see some display that the RPS is bad or faulty, just ignore this. I don't remember the specific IOS version but this is a known minor bug.

You may not understand much from the show diag if you are not used to cisco devices.

If you look at logs, then show log will do. You could log your log messages to a syslog or snmp server.

There are many ways to check health and the performance of the network, you can create a quick list to according to the deferent device under CLI or use the management software, such as Cisco Works. LMS. I used to create a quick list and save it as desktop wallpaper.

show environment status power-supply 1

show environment status power-supply 2

show power status power-supply 1

show power status power-supply 2

show environment temperature

show environment connector

show ip ospf nei

show ip pim nei

show route sum
