how to disable guest SSIDs on EPC2425

Hi,

I wish to disable the three guest SSIDs that were preconfigured and enabled on my EPC2425. I am concerned that - having spent time and effort setting up a secure primary SSID - there are three open SSIDs allowing anyone to access my residential gateway.

I have no way to disable these SSIDs. I dont have the setup CD so I have to use the built-in html setup menus via a web browser to configure the device. However, these setup menus do not provide any options relating to guest SSIDs, not even an enable/disable option.

how to disable guest SSIDs on EPC2425

Mr. Hancock,

Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. Thank you for using the Cisco Community Post Forums.

This is actually not a product we support on the Small Business Side. Up front this is not a product that I am completely familiar with.

However, normally Cisco does not send out units with Guest Wireless pre-configured on them. What are you seeing that leads you to believe that they are up and open for use?

Could you send me a screenshot of that page in the GUI? What name are they using? Are you seeing them listed in available wireless when you search for connections? Was this a brand new purchase or did you get from someone who had it and already did some configuration on it?

Thanks

how to disable guest SSIDs on EPC2425

Hello Eric,

Sorry I posted in the wrong forum area. A person from Linksys said I should post here.

I do not know who configured the guest SSIDs. Its possible guest access may have been enabled when my modem/router was initially installed possibly using a CD. However I doubt that the installer configured them. They are hidden - they do not broadcast their SSID name - so I was not aware of them until recently when I installed Intel’s wireless software. Now when I search for available access points I see my primary access point (UPCapdub) and three additional access points with no SSID name. If I change my Primary SSID’s channel the other SSIDs also change to the new channel. Also the signal strength is the same for all four SSIDs.

I’m supplying five screen snapshots. The first is from my web browser while accessing the device’s built-in menu system. It shows the primary and three guest interfaces enabled. Note their MAC addresses.

The other images are screen snapshots taken when I was searching for available access points using Intel’s software. I took a snapshot of property details for my primary SSID (UPCapdub) and the three guest SSIDs. Note their MACs (BSSIDs).

My ISP upgraded their broadband service and supplied me with a new TC7200 modem that supports their higher broadband speeds. They no longer supply the EPC2425. I’m using my old EPC2425 as a second access point to extend signal coverage. I simply want to disable guest SSIDs but there are no menu options relating to guest SSIDs in the setup menu.

Found some more info.

Here is the user guide for your device. You will need to go under the Setup Tab and look for Basic Wireless Setup. There should be some way in there to disable those SSID's

how to disable guest SSIDs on EPC2425

Hello Eric,

Thank you for helping out with the problem.

The Signal tab only shows the state of the cable signal – the upstream and downstream channels. However at this time I’m not using the EPC2425 as a cable modem. I’m using a new TC7200 as the cable modem because my broadband has been upgraded from 30GB to 50GB. I’m using the EPC2425 for WiFi only, providing a second access point to extend signal coverage. This way my devices can roam between the two access points. I have DHCP disabled on the EPC2425. I just want to add here that the EPC2425 is operating perfectly as a second access point. My concern is the open guest access it provides.

The Setup tab has many menu items and sub-items, too many to show on a snapshot. It provides the following menu items and sub-items:

Basic Settings:

               Password Settings

               Set Time

               Network Configuration

               LAN IP Address Management

               Fixed CPE IP Assignment

               Restart Modem

               Save Configuration to your PC

               Dynamic DNS

Advanced Settings:

               Options

               IP Address Filtering

               MAC Address Filtering

               Port Filtering

               Port Forwarding

               Port Triggers

               DMZ Host

               VPN Termination

               Static Route

Firewall:

               Options

               Event Logging

Parental Control:

               User Setup

               Basic Rules

               Time of Day Rules

               Local Log

Wireless:

               Basic

               Security

               Advanced

               Access Control

               Bridging

I have been through every option provided in the Setup tab. It allows configuration, enable and disable for the primary SSID "UPCapdub" only. There is no mention of guest SSIDs. I have already used it to reconfigure my primary SSID “UPCapdub”.

I already have that user guide you found. It also makes no mention of guest access.

I read on some message board that the install/setup CD may have “Cisco connect” which may provide a high-level option to enable/disable support for guest access, but I cannot find that CD. I found and download a copy of “Cisco connect”. It failed to find the EPC2425 its access point was operating and fully functional. I think the copy I downloaded may only have support for Syslink products. I also read on the same message board that no guest SSID configuration support was included in the built-in HTML menu system on the EPC2425.

how to disable guest SSIDs on EPC2425

Hello Eric,

In the meantime – until a solution can be found – I have decided to restrict WiFi access to my devices only, by entering the MAC addresses of my devices in the Setup > Wireless > Access Control > “Allow Access List”. Hopefully that will prevent unwelcome guests from connecting.

Best regards,

John

how to disable guest SSIDs on EPC2425

Hi John,

The EPC2425 is considered an internet service provider (ISP) supported product. In  other words you need to contact your ISP or technology reseller that you  purchased this from to help you with your question.

However I found a link that may help you:

Hey John. After some searching I found this forum.

https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/network-infrastructure/routing

There are several other questions in here about your device that people have answered. Perhaps it would be sest if ou tried asking your question here.

Sorry I couldn't help you resolve your issue.

Thanks Eric and Cindy.

I restored factory settings and guest access is still enabled. Though two of the guest SSIDs show as Open - no security - I could not connect to them.

I have restricted WiFi access to my devices only using an allow MAC list. That should deal with security issues.

Best regards,

John
