IP

Hi all, when someone says. my network runs on IP, what are they exactly saying, what is IP responsable for, is it just addressing ?

Hi Carl

I always understand this to mean that their network is running the TCP/IP protocols and not running IPX, DECnet or Appletalk etc.

IP (Internet Protocol) is a list of rules of how datagrams (packets) are to be constructed and used. For instance, the rules define addresses (both source and destination), port numbers, other information indicators, maximum size, protocol, etc.
