Move a switch from VTP client mode to VTP transparent mode

Hi,

Does anybody have an experience / knowledge if I move a switch from VTP client mode to VTP transparent mode, should I re-create all the VLANs on this switch?

Thank you!

its up to your requirement...when you move your swich to client mode to transperent mode...now you can add and delete the VLAN...but now your switch will not part in the VTP information exchange...or you can say it will not propogate its vtp information to other switch or it will not synchronise with the vtp information of the other switch...and you can create vlan on that transperent switch or delete from it but it will not propogate to all other switch...

rate this post if it helps

hi devang

well said but the question is different.

and answer will be yes you have to manually create the vlan on the switch.but if you restart the switch than it will automatically create the vlan which are configured on access port of switch.

Re: Move a switch from VTP client mode to VTP transparent mode

Hi,

When switch running in the VTP claint mode it will not have any vlan information in its startup config but in the same time it will have VLAN information which is learned from VTP server in its running config. So when VTP claint converted to VTP trasperant mode, you will not find any problem or changes in the VLAN untill you reload the switch, remember in the same time it will not learn any VLAN information from the VTP server.

You need not.

Re: Move a switch from VTP client mode to VTP transparent mode

Hi there,

The VTP and the VLANs are seperate beasts.

The switch has a vlan database which is held in a seperate file to the config. If you type "sh flash" you'll see it in there.

VTP passes around the VLAN information and the switch stores it in the vlan database. If you remove the switch from the VTP domain, then VTP will not be able to update this file and it will remain exactly as it was.

In short - if you've got 20 vlans, when you go to VTP transparent, you'll still have 20 vlans
