Hi,

I just have a simple question. For the OSPF configuration why do we need a process ID?

For example:

Router OSPF 100

The process ID can be any number. So why do we need it?

Thanks

Hi,

there might be situations where you need more than one OSPF process. Assume one company buying another company, both using OSPF. You can´t simply connect the two OSPF domains so you might want to start with a router running two OSPF processes one adjacent to each company and performing redistribution.

Another example would be OSPF on a PE router in an MPLS VPN environment. The provider would peer with several customers, who should NOT be getting connectivity. Again you need several OSPF processes on one router (PE).

And the process ID is used to sort things IOS wise on this router.

Hope this helps
