Hi all, can anyone tell me why we use ppp, and why do most isp's use it ?

how come we cant just use hdlc, is this cisco's own encapsualtion ?

also, why would we use ppp over ethernet ? is this only to carry the authentication ?

hdlc encapsulation is cisco proprietary, can only be used among cisco devices.

PPPoE encapsulates ppp , see the standard 2516
