Turning on a 2501 lab router gives the following prompt, SanJose2(boot)> and enable mode: SanJose2(boot)#.  Why does (boot) show up?

Does the router successfully boot up or reach the rommon mode? If it does, could you provide me with the output of show version command from it?

Make sure to change the config-register value to 0x2102 from 0x2101

I believe config-register value 0x2102 does not retrieve configuration that was stored in NVRAM.

"(boot)" means boot mode.. this is kind of a Mini IOS... it means that the main IOS file is not loading up correctly. this Boot mode does not have full routing functionality, its just for Recovery purpose.

there are couple of things I would like to mention:

- Your router is too old, End of life

- The reason why IOS is not booting up properly could be: Bad IOS file in flash, Bad flash itself causing no boot situation, corrupt DRAM which is not able to load the IOS after it is decompressed

So to fix this, you can try the following:

1. Change the config register to 0x2102   (0x2142 is the code which bypasses config from NVRAM) and reload the router

2. if it still comes up in rommon or this Boot mode, then you would have to try and load another IOS to eliminate bad IOS file from the picture
