1602 cleanair, coverage & with MSE

Hi,

 

  I got a few doubts on the cisco 1600 series access-points. Customer is asking how it differs from cisco 2600 series access-points. I am specifically interested in,

1.   Difference between Cleanair and cleanair express in layman's term. What all are functionalities we will miss if we use the cisco 1600 instead of 2600 series access-points.

 

2. What is the distance that 1600 & 2600 can cover? . 1600 can give good performance in warehouse environments, where roof is in 30ft high from the ground?

 

3. what all are funtionalities will change in the folowing usecases MSE with 1600(cleanair express), MSE with 2600(cleanair), MSE without cleanair on its own.

1. Difference between Clean air and clean air express in layman's term. What all are functionality we will miss if we use the cisco 1600 instead of 2600 series access-points.

It's best to compare the data sheets for each access point, but I would probably lean towards the 2700e, 3600e or 3700e for what you are trying to accomplish. Of course, this will depend upon the size of the organization and budget.

From an 11n perspective, there are a couple of differences that make the 2700 more suitable for this environment, but that's not to say that the 1600 won't work. The 2700 also supports 11ac.

For example:

11n Support on 1600

  • 3 x 3 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with two spatial streams
  • Maximal ratio combining (MRC)
  • 20- and 40-MHz channels
  • PHY data rates up to 300 Mbps
  • Packet aggregation: A-MPDU (Tx/Rx), A-MSDU (Tx/Rx)
  • 802.11 dynamic frequency selection (DFS) (Bin 5)
  • Cyclic shift diversity (CSD) support

11n Support  on 2700

  • 3x4 MIMO with three spatial streams
  • Maximal ratio combining (MRC)
  • 802.11n and 802.11a/g beam forming
  • 20- and 40-MHz channels
  • PHY data rates up to 450 Mbps (40 MHz with 5 GHz)
  • Packet aggregation: A-MPDU (Tx/Rx), A-MSDU (Tx/Rx)
  • 802.11 dynamic frequency selection (DFS)
  • Cyclic shift diversity (CSD) support


There are some site survey related questions which need to be answered before you can conclusively decide which AP and antenna to use. 2.4 GHz in these types of environments often proves troubling due to challenges related to channel design, interference and RF multi-path. I prefer to enable features like client band select to suppress probe requests on 2.4 GHz, which subsequently allows you to take advantage of 11a and 11n using 5 GHz. (more channels, etc)

Questions:

  • What type of clients are being used? Do they support 11a or 11n (5GHz.)

  • Do the clients need to roam seamlessly? What is acceptable packet loss?

  1. What is the distance that 1600 & 2600 can cover?

  2. Can the 1600 give good performance in warehouse environments, where roof is in 30 ft. high from the ground?

RF distance is based on data rates supported, antenna Gain and and transmit power. It's also dependent upon RF factors, such as co-channel interference and RF Multipath.

 

In a warehouse with 30 ft ceilings, it's important to make sure that you are using an AP that provides the flexibility of using external antennas (higher gain). As mention above, RF multipath is often a design consideration in warehouse environments due to the metallic nature of the structure and shelving.

4. What is functionality will change in the following use cases:

    • MSE with 1600 (clean air express)

    • MSE with 2600 (clean air)

    • MSE without clean air on its own.
