I have a 3850 switch stack and 1602i Lightweight access points. I setup the APs to join the switch via the DNS entry. When I access the 3850 GUI and go to the wireless controller to change the APs configs such as the names of the APs or their IPs, they change for a while they revert back to what they were within 1 minute.

Hi

That's not the way you configure AP name on 3850 (no need to go to config mode). Here is the command

3850#ap name <OLD_NAME> name <NEW_NAME>

Below is an example to show this.

3850-2#show ap summary
Number of APs: 1

Global AP User Name: Not configured
Global AP Dot1x User Name: Not configured

AP Name                 AP Model  Ethernet MAC    Radio MAC       State
-------------------------------------------------------------------
L3502-1                 3502I     ccef.4872.0fc3  2c3f.382b.5260  Registered

3850-2#ap name L3502-1 name LAP1

3850-2#show ap summary
Number of APs: 1

Global AP User Name: Not configured
Global AP Dot1x User Name: Not configured

AP Name              AP Model  Ethernet MAC    Radio MAC       State

GUI of these controller is not reliable. Try to use CLI & it will work all the time.

Below post give you some basic CLI commands including hostname change.

If you still prefer GUI, then go for the latest IOS-XE 3.3.2 version which has lots of GUI improvements

I have set the AP name from the 3850 CLI and Web GUI. In each case it sticks for about a minute and then reverts back to AP+MAC address. Same with the static IPs -- on that one I finially made a reservation on the DHCP server.

What is the IOS-XE version of your 3850 ? I have no issues with 3.3.2 running for sometime & every time if I change an AP name it will retain.

ok, you are running latest image.

I do not have 1602 to test, I think it is better to log a TAC case (if you have support contract) what Cisco is saying about this.

Keep us posted if you get any update from them
