871W - very basic wireless setup help!

I have been trying for days to get my wireless setup to no avial... I want to start very basic, no security, only one SSID, etc, this is just a lab router so no security issues present.

What I am currently hung up on is that I see many, many posts about wireless configs that people are using and they usually look like this:

!

dot11 syslog

!

dot11 ssid R3WLAN

authentication open

guest-mode

infrastructure-ssid

interface Dot11Radio0

ip address 10.1.12.1 255.255.255.0

ip nat inside

ip virtual-reassembly

!

ssid R3WLAN

!

speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0

54.0

station-role root

!

but, I cannot do...

dot11 ssid R3WLAN

authentication open

guest-mode

infrastructure-ssid

when I try typing in

dot11 ssid R3WLAN

from global config mode, I get

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

The closest thing I could come up with is:

!

interface Dot11Radio0

no ip address

!

ssid sharky

    vlan 10

    authentication open

    guest-mode

!

speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0

station-role root

!

by going under the interface, as you can see, but that does not work, I can see the SSID from my wireless clients, but they cannot join. I have been searching for days about this, I'm not getting anywhere...

it sure seems that the "dot11 ssid ssid-name" needs to be put in from global config, but my 871W just won't accept it...

my goal is to understand this, not to just paste in a configuration that is working...

thanks in advance, Gary

Here how it varies with code version

871W - very basic wireless setup help!

It depends on the code you are running... some you specify the dot11 ssid and then others you specify it under the radio interface.

Thanks,

Scott

Thanks Scott -

This is the output from show version

Cisco IOS Software, C870 Software (C870-ADVSECURITYK9-M), Version 12.4(9)T2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc4)

Technical Support: http://www.cisco.com/techsupport

Copyright (c) 1986-2006 by Cisco Systems, Inc.

Compiled Sat 18-Nov-06 23:33 by prod_rel_team

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.3(8r)YI2, RELEASE SOFTWARE

Neo uptime is 1 hour, 53 minutes

System returned to ROM by reload

System image file is "flash:c870-advsecurityk9-mz.124-9.T2.bin"

Last reload reason: Reload Command

I cannot imagine that gives you enough information to know if that is the case with my software... assuming that I am correctly setting up the ssid, I guess the next thing I should focus on is the BVI issue, I don't have anything configured for it and I have read that bridging is necessary for the 871W... can anyone confirm that?

what about IRB? does that have to be configured? it seems that most, if not all, of the configs I have seen have it on.

I have tried pasting in configs that others have posted and say is working on their system but mine won't ever accept them, it always rejects some part of their config along the way but I don't suppose that's unusual... I just have to assume that my router is working properly for now. Since the radio comes up and sends out the SSID I believe that is sound reasoning.

Here is a guide that can help and also a link to a spreadsheet that can help:

Thanks Scott, I have already tried that sample config from Cisco, that is one of those that uses the SSID that does not go under the interface so I cannot use it... and for the TechRepublic link, I investigated that as well but I was turned off by all the personal information they required for registration.

I just don't understand whY I seem to be the only one that cannot out the SSID in under global config, that makes my config somehow quite different; as I said, when I try to follow the lead of others that post their working configs, my router balks at some point...

Again it depends on the code.... if you look at the configuration guide or the one from tech republic, they mention the code running on the access point.  This is the same with autonomous access points, just have to understand where you have to enter the ssid information.

Thanks,

Scott

On the access point, can you issue a show version.

Scott,

This is the "show version" that I posted earlier... this is all that I know how to do...

I don't know what you mean by "On the access point" the 871W is all integrated, if there's a way of addressing the Access Point separately I don't know what it is.

Re: 871W - very basic wireless setup help!

Scott,

I have posted what I think were the key pieces to getting this working:

I pulled the ip address and nat from vlan1

I created BVI 1 and gave it the ip address and nat

I turned on bridge irb

I created Dot11Radio0.1 and setup the encapsulation dot1Q and assigned vlan 1 native and bridge-group 1

added bridge 1 protocol ieee

added bridge 1 route ip

At first, I saw it associate but not pull and ip address, I think pulling nat from vlan 1 fixed that, then, after I saw it connect, I setup wpa and the encryption... (of course, after doing some cartwheels around the house...)

Thanks for all the help! I have saved my config to flash and to tftp, I am going to wipe it out next and recreate is all once again to see if I really have the process down.

-Gary

I can see the SSID from my wireless clients, but they cannot join

What error message do you see?  How strong is the wireless signal?
