Access Point Connection

Hi Experts,

I am new in wireless technology. Is Access Point(AP) directly connect to the siwtch or is it a standalone device?

An access point connects to a switch. Now you have autonomous and lightweight access points. Autonomous are stand alone AP's and require a configuration. A lightweight AP requires a wireless LAN controller. Lightweight AP's are considered thin AP's because the WLC manages the AP configuration. The autonomous AP is considered a fat AP because you need to configure it.

Depends on what you are trying to do.

I have tried using a WAP as a games hub.  You can also connect the WAP to a switch and out to the internet.
