AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 ethernet interface stops working

Hi,

I installed two AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 access points, running a fairly simple config, WPA2 PSK, with AES cipher, both the same SSID.

The two access points are connected to Cisco 2960G switches, which are in turn connected to each other, again without any fancy config options, no VLAN's ed.

After a random while, varying from 30 minutes to 15 hours, the access points will stop sending/recieving traffic on the ethernet interface.

The units don't stop at the same moment, this also varies seemingly random. It's not related to load or the amount of clients (1 to 15).

Only turning on one unit doesn't make any difference.

The units keep sending out their SSID, you can associate to them, but the DHCP requests aren't passed on to the DHCP server which is connected to one of the 2960G's.

If you wirelessly connect to the AP and set a manual IP adress you can reach the webinterface and telnet/ssh to the access point. The ethernet link is reported as being up on the access point. Also the switch reports a link on the port to which the access point is connected.

Resetting the link does have no effect.

The log doesn't mention any errors or warnings.

Power cycling or reloading the access point will put it back in working order for a varying amount of time.

Access point version:

Cisco IOS Software, C1140 Software (C1140-K9W7-M), Version 12.4(21a)JA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 ethernet interface stops working

There are a lot of reasons behind that.

In the meantime please attach the following

Show tech from one defected AP

Show tech from the switch at which the AP is connected

highlight the port at which the AP is connected

Attached are the "show tech" outputs from one of the AP's and the switch it's connected to.

The AP is connected to port GigE 0/21 of the switch.

Hello Fabio

can u upload the show log from the AP

Also try to run the following command from time time till the issue happens:

show proc memory sorted

to see if there is certain process smoking the memory on the AP

Show log just after a reset after the unit stopped responding.

Show proc memory sorted just before it stopped responding.

Hmmmm ... 2960G so which means you could be powering the WAPs using a Power Injector.

Can I ask for the following output:

1.  2960G:  sh interface ;

2.  2960G:  sh log

3.  2960G:  sh controller e ;

These outputs are available in the show tech

The units are powered by AIR-PWR-B= dedicated power supplies.

Hello Fabio

Here is what should be done for the time being to narrow down the root cause:

ollect the output of the following commands every 30 minutes period for one of the APs

that are facing the problem till the issue happens again.

Show proc memory sorted
Show memory statistics
Show logs

Send me the outputs collected on multiple stages

When the issue happens we need to collect sniffer trace while the client is not able to get
an ip address on the switch port at which the AP is connected to verify if the AP actually blocking
the DHCP traffic or not.

AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 ethernet interface stops working

I have upgraded one of the units to 12.4(25d)JA1 this morning, waiting to see if the problem will occur with this firmware version as well. Just to clarify, it's not just DHCP that isn't getting through, the whole ethernet link seems dead when it happens, no traffic at all.

COOOOL!

Try this commands on the switch:

1.  Command:  test cable tdr int g0/21;

2.  Wait for approximately 7 seconds;

3.  Command:  sh cable tdr int g0/21; and

4.  Please post the output.

AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 ethernet interface stops working

Both AP's have been running all day now with 12.4(25d)JA1, with a moderate load, 5-15 clients, mixed 2.4 and 5 Ghz.

No problems so far.

I think that proves there is nothing wrong with the cables or the switch and the problem lies within the factory installed 12.4(21a)JA1 firmware.

Imo a bad thing "enterprise" units are shipped out with a firmware version not even able to perform a completely basic setup.

Did you also upgrade the bootstrap to version 12.4(23c)JA1?

Re: AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 ethernet interface stops working

No, didn't touch the bootstrap.

Should I upgrade the bootstrap as well?

Units are still running btw.
