Cannot access nor reset air-lap1242ag-a-k9

Ok long story short here...

Someone hands me this AP and says can you get it working?  I'm not an IT person, but computer savvy.  Did some searches on how to reset and access.

I tried to reset it doing the mode button for 1 to 2 secs as well as the 20 to 30 secs.

When I did the 20 to 30 second reset it never turns red...rather a purpleish color.

I can see it pull an IP (dhcp) on my network, but cannot access it via a browser pointed to that address nor using hyperterminal or terraterm.

Any clues here?  Is there a trick or is this a brick?

Thanks for any help.

Your access point you posted:

air-lap1242ag-a-k9

Is a lightweight access point that requires a WLC. What you need us a standalone access point which would of been air-ap1242ag-a-k9. The "L" means lightweight.

Here is the issue... You probably don't have a support contract to be able to download an autonomous code to run this AP in standalone. If you can get the code, you can convert this AP from lightweight to autonomous by following one of these instructions:

Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release

Hopefully you can get the image or else this AP is no good for your. Your other option is to obtain a console cable so you can console into the AP and view what's in the flash. If there is an autonomous image, you can set that image to boot and you will have a working autonomous 1242.

- Disconnect the AP from power.

- power the up while holding the mode button.

- wait for about 20 - 30 seconds.

- the LEDs move purple/red. at this point release the mode button.

Make sure that your finger/pin is not releasing the mode button by mistake for any period no matter how short it is.

Good luck.

Adding to Amjad...

CLI:

If the privileged command prompt ap# is available in the CLI, the write erase or clear lwapp private-config command and the reload command erase the startup configuration and reset the unit.

GUI:

If the GUI is available, choose System Software > System Configuration. Press the Reset to Defaults button.

If neither the GUI nor the CLI is available with sufficient privileges, complete these instructions in order to use the Mode button:

Mode Button:

  • Disconnect power from the AP.

  • Disconnect the power jack for external power or the Ethernet cable for inline power.

  • Press and hold the MODE button while you reconnect power to the AP.

  • Hold the MODE button until the Status LED turns amber, and then release the button.

  • The Status LED turns amber in approximately 1 to 2 seconds.

  • After the AP reboots, reconfigure the AP and use the web browser interface, the Telnet interface, or Cisco IOS Software commands.

  • Note: The AP is configured with the factory default values that include:

  • The IP address, which is set to receive an IP address with DHCP

  • The default username and password, "Cisco"

Re: Cannot access nor reset air-lap1242ag-a-k9

Thanks.

With the info you posted I was able to figure it out.

One thing for anyone else in my situation that I couldn't find spelled out anywhere is that you need the cisco rollover cable to db9 serial port connector (or I did anyway) to get into the AP via the console port.

Once I figured that out and flashed the automomous firmware I found the IP it had gotten from DHCP via the console using the command "show ip int brief" and was able to configure from there to get what I needed.
