Choosing the right antenna

I've done a few simple wireless installations based on the AP1231 in the past but right now I'm looking to do a medium sized one. The building is about 225 feet end to end and about 70 feet wide. I've got three floors and would like to provide 54mbps to as much of the coverage as possible.

The two omnidirection antennas I'm considering are the AIR-ANT5959 and the AIR-ANT1728 but I also see that the simple black dipole antenna (AIR-ANT4941) has nearly as much range as the other two at substantially lower cost.

Is there really that little difference in antennas offered? A patch won't quite work logistically.

Anyway; I've used the 5959 before and know it can do the job but the others are a less expensive (much less in the case of the dipole) and if I can save some money that would be great for my budget.

Re: Choosing the right antenna

Hi Joseph,

I have used all three of the antennas that you referenced here, and my vote would be for the 1728. I don't think the 4941 will do the job and the 5959 doesn't have quite the range of a 1728. Here are some additional estimates;

Approximate Indoor Range at 54 Mbps 88 ft (27 m)

Approximate Indoor Range at 6 Mbps 295 ft (90 m)

Approximate Indoor Range at 54 Mbps 114 ft (35 m)

Approximate Indoor Range at 6 Mbps 379 ft (116 m)

Approximate Indoor Range at 54 Mbps 90 ft (27 m)

Approximate Indoor Range at 6 Mbps 300 ft (91 m)

From this good guide;

Cisco Aironet 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Antennas and Accessories

Hope this helps!
