Is it possible to convert capwap to LWAPP via telnet?
The AP did not reject the command with an error, but it did not accept the command either. Is there anyway I can do this remotely? Do I need to gather the AP's and console in?

LWAPP is only supported in old WLC software code (may be prior to 6.x). So all the current WLC software only support CAPWAP.
Why do you want your AP to use LWAPP ? Do you have AP registration issue ? Since you changed telnet feature on this AP, that should already being registered to your WLC.
What do you want to achieve ?

I'm not well versed on this subject. So, is CAPWAP the new standard for Cisco lightweight AP's? And essentially, an AP is either CAPWAP or autonomous? If so, my day just got a whole lot better. I simply wanted the AP's to be managed by or through the WLC as they provide network access to users.

Yes, CAPWAP is the IEEE standard (not proprietary like LWAPP which is cisco proprietary) for AP to WLC communication.
If AP is managed via controller (WLC) then we referred as Lightweight (or unified wireless). If it operate standalone without a controller then it is referred as "Autonomous". You can convert an AP from Autonomous to Lightweight (& vise versa)
In your case since you want to manage it through WLC (which is the best way of deploying wireless), you do not want to worry about these encapsulation method too much.
If you are new then I would suggest you to read about basic topics like AP registraion/CAPWAP. Here are some links from my blog which may help you on this

You want the APs to be converted from "standalone" to CAPWAP via Telnet or SSH? Yes, it can be done.
All you need is the IOS Recovery file (aka RCV) and just use the traditional archive command: archive download-sw tftp://

Convert the AP to standalone and then it can be achieved.

Here is what worked for me - The AP would not join the controller, the lwapp ap controller ip address x.x.x.x was not available.
I used the following command:
debug capwap console cli
After issuing the command above, many more commands became available. I was able to issue lwapp ap controller ip address x.x.x.x. Finally, the AP joined the controller.
