Can you use a omni directional on the primary and a patch antenna on the secondary with the AP set up for diversity?

I read in Syngress-Building a Cisco Wireless Lan that you could even use a antenna splitter to use 2 antennas on 1 connections (sample was a two 2dbi omni directionals)?

Use of different antennas is not recommended because of the way that diversity works. Both antennas should be of the same type and, if directional, point in the same direction.

You might be able to use a splitter, but be aware that

(1) you should expect decreased range.

(2) you might have out-of-phase signals arrive at the jack
