high availability in wireless controller

Hi,

We have two 4400 WLC's. We have around 20 access points in our network.

If we assign controller1 as primary for half of the access points and controller 2 as primary for the other half, does this mean the association of the ap's indicate load balancing by the controllers.

Does this mean wlc does load balancing as different ap's associate on different controllers. or does it only server as active-standby wlc.

No.  This means that during failure, the WAP will go to the configured secondary WLC.

If all of the WAPs concerned are located in one building, I would not recommend that you assign half of the WAPs to one controller because this means that you'll be experiencing inter-controller roaming.  If your WLC can support the entire WAP numbers, put all of them in the same WLC and assign the second WLC as a failover option instead.

When working with high availability if you have half of the access points with the 
information of WLC 1 as primary and WLC 2 as secondary and for the other half you have
the information of WLC as primary and then WLC 1 as secondary, what will happen is that
half the access points will use WLC 1 as the primary and the other half the WLC 2 and
once either WLC goes down or the APs cannot reach it then the APs will move to the
specified WLC as secondary.
