Hi,

The existing system have :

1. AIR-CT5508-50-K9 x 1 set (standalone mode)

2. AP 3502i  x 12 set

I would like to extend the equipment as these below :

1. 5508 Controller (Redundant mode with the 1st 5508 Controller)

2. AP 3502i x 78 set

3. 5508 Controller : Act as Anchor Controller at DMZ zone

How many APs adder license require in this system?

Is Anchor Controller need license of APs?

Thanks.

NT.

What you can do is get an 50 ap adder for the existing and then get a 5508-100 for your redundant wlc. As for the guest anchor, you just need a 5508-12. There is no need for a later license since there is no ap that will join this wlc.

Thanks,

So sorry Scott.  I'll have to disagree with you on this.  The only license you can purchase multiple times is the 100 AP license.  So if you have the WLC that will support, in your case, 50 WAPs, you CANNOT buy the -25 or the -50.  The next thing that you can get is the -100 WAP license.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo this also means that the highest amount of WAP your WLC can support is 450.  Current license of 50 +100 +100 +100 +100 = 450.

It's a Cisco thing.  I have no idea who's the "genius" who thought of this.

Well this doc does mention that you can. And I think I was able to before.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10315/products_tech_note09186a0080b78104.shtml

You can order Cisco 5500 Series Controllers with support for 12, 25, 50, 100, 250 or 500 APs as the controller's base capacity. You can add additional AP capacity through capacity adder licenses available at 25, 50, 100 and 250 AP capacities. You can add the capacity adder licenses to any base license in any combination to arrive at the maximum capacity of 500 APs. The base and adder licenses are supported through both rehosting and Return Material Authorizations (RMAs).

Note: A 5500 Series WLC with a base license of 12 can only support up to 487 total APs because only 25, 50, 100, and 250 adder licenses are supported.

Yes.  This one is true because you order license -25, -50, -100, -100, -100 and -100 which brings the total to 487.  But what the data sheet won't tell you if you have 25 and the highest you can go is 475 (25 + 50 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100) and if you have a -50 license WLC the highest you can go is 450.

So if you have a WLC 5508 with a 25 WAP license and you want to add another 25 WAP license, it's not possible.  The only thing you can go is a -50 license.  You also can't add a -50 and -100 license to a WLC 5508 with a -100 WAP license.  You can add a -100 WAP license.

I believe Stephen (aka Steve) made a post on this issue once.  Surprised me when I saw it.
