How to convert an AP 1700 / 2700 from lightweight mode to autonomous mode ?

Atsushi Ikeda

I know that AP1700/2700 support the unified mode from version 15.3.3.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/15-3-3/configuration/guide/cg15-3-3/cg15-3-3-chap1-overview.html

But I could not change the mode because of the following error.

AP1c6a.7a92.5468#capwap ap autonomous

Convert to Autonomous image. Proceed? (yes/[no]): yes

No Autonomous image found! Conversion failed.

Why was that error message displayed ? Please tell me how I can resolve this.

Thanks.

Atsushi

I think AP1700 can boot by using a lightweight image that is on the software download page for AP2700/3700.  Is this correct ?

Yes, it is correct, as per this 1700/2700/2600/3600/3700 all have same image starting with "ap3g2-xxx

You have to have the autonomous IOS file downloaded to the AP.

ap3g2-k9w7-tar.153-3.JAB.tar

is the file you need, you also need valid CCO Credentials to download the file.

Hello, Charles

Thank you for comment.

O.K. I understand the file is needed.

Is the following command right to download the file to the AP ?
"(Cisco Controller) >config ap tftp-downgrade ~~~"

Please teach me one more point.

Is it possible to convert an AP from autonomous mode to lightweight mode by using any command ? If not , is it only re-installation that allow that conversion ?

Thank you for your support.

Thank you Scott.

I managed to download the image to the AP by following this:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918
(archive download sw /overwrite)

However, when I reload the AP, it still joins the WLC again like a lightweight AP.

Thanks!

Hello, atsushiikeda.

Do you have an existing support contract/SmartNet for these APs?

Let me know if you have additional concerns or e-mail (adawa@cisco.com) me directly. Kind regards.

Hello

I tried to confirm unified mode operation on an AP2700i.

I found the following results through the validation.

#Conversion from Lightweight to Autonomous

1. When we use the command( "config ap tftp-download...") for conversion on the WLC version 8.0.100, the AP can't boot as autonomous mode unless the version is earlier than 15.3(3)JAB.
*This is explicitly stated in the release note.

#Conversion from Autonomous to Lightweight

1. 15.3(3)JAB autonomous image does not run a WLC discovery process. I think this is not an assumed behaviour. So once the ap boots up as  autonomous mode,  it never boot up as lightweight mode n spite of the presence or absence of a WLC.

2. So when we convert the AP to autonomous mode , we may have to use lightweight image as before.

3. There is no AP1700 lightweight image 1700 on the software download site ..!

Though I don't still try, I think AP1700 can boot by using a lightweight image that is on the software download page for AP2700/3700.  Is this correct ?

Thanks.

Hi Atsushi

Not a problem, Glad if that helps you

Here is another good post you should read. It is about how to decode those image filename information.

According to my network setup
Lightweight AP BVI1 IP address is 192.168.1.4
Laptop's IP address where TFTP server is installed 192.168.1.7 [Default Router IP]

First disconnect the ethernet cable from the AP then Press the Mode button and Put back the ethernet cable to the AP and hold the Mode button Untill flash light turns to umber and Once the Lightweight AP goes to online then apply the following commands to convert it to Autonomous version:
