install software on WLC 4400 / 4402

Hi All,

I have a AIR-WLC4402-50-K9 that I acquired off ebay for cheap for my lab studies. The problem is that the internal compact flash card was removed by seller "for security reasons". I knew this when I bought it, but thought I could figure out how to re-install the software from scratch.. i.e. format a flash card and tftp the software on to it... But this device and the software has me stumped!. Am I understanding correctly that the software has 2 files? A Kickstart image if you will?
So, How do I install the OS from scratch?

Thank you in advance.

Chuck

Hi Chuck,- how you connect to

Hi Chuck,

- how you connect to the WLC to install the image?

- how did you format the flash card? (what steps you followed).

- From where you get the software image?

The software is usually has ONE file.

However, under certain circumstances, the main file doesn't work and you have to get an RTOS image and install it then reboot before you can install the main image.

NOTE: installing the main image where RTOS image is required may get your device unusable. be careful.

Amjad

Hi,

RTOS: Real Time Operating System.

https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/10006/rtos-versions-wlan-controllers

RTOS images are not usually available for public and you have to contact Cisco TAC to get them.

Please elaborate what you get when the WLC boots, what you exactly do and at what point you get stuck?

Hi Chuck,well, as I mentioned

Hi Chuck,

well, as I mentioned before you shouldn't provide the normal image where the RTOS image is expected. I find someone did that once and they RMA the device. I can see that the transfer failed in your scenario. I am not sure if the file transfer fails because of the image size as the RTOS file size is much less than then normal image size.

Do not transfer AP image or boot loader unless you have independent files for that ( and you don't have).

Now, I've no previous experience of removing flash from the WLC and formatting it. But I would say the FAT system it expect is Linux File System (ext3 possibly). Have you tried the option (Reformat Compact Flash)? It may format your flash the correct way.

Also, as I told you, you need the RTOS image. If you have by anyway a contact to Cisco TAC you can get it for your device model. I hope it will fix your issue.

Regards,

Amjad

Amjad is correct here... you

Amjad is correct here... you either need to get support on your 4400 to open a TAC case, or else you will need to find someone out there who has had to re-install the RTOS image and provide that to you along with instructions.  You will not be able to get that WLC functional without having the RTOS image installed and then your firmware.

Scott.
