port bundling in controller & switch

Hi,

We are trying to form etherchannel between a wlc-5508 pair & a cisco 6506 switch.

This was tried with lacp also, but the channel stays in standalone mode. Configs on both sides were the same.

Below is the interface information,

Interface Name                   Port Vlan Id  IP Address      Type    Ap Mgr Guest

-------------------------------- ---- -------- --------------- ------- ------ -----

user                            1    11       10.40.11.23    Dynamic No     No

svcs                              1    14       10.40.14.30      Dynamic No     No

management                       1    untagged 10.40.18.5      Static  Yes    No

redundancy-management            1    untagged 10.40.18.7       Static  No     No

redundancy-port                  -    untagged 169.254.18.7    Static  No     No

service-port                     N/A  N/A      192.168.100.1   Static  No     No

virtual                          N/A  N/A      1.1.1.1         Static  No     No

int gi1/0/13

swi tru encap dot1q

sw tru nati vla 18

sw tru allow vla 14,37

This was also tried with chann-gr 54 mode active for lacp.

When only one port is connected the connectivity from wlc to switch works well.

Also, there is ap sso running on this, which was disabled later on during etherchannel configuration stages to check, but it was still the same.

Appreciate all inputs.

You can't ethernchennel unless you have LAG enabled.  From your show interface summary, your not using LAG.

Thanks,

Scott

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

just to add, WLC cannot negotiation etherchannel mode. Therefore LACP or PAgP is NOT supported for WLC ether channels mode should be ON always.

1. You have to configure "channel group x mode on" at the switch end.

2. "config lag enable" on the WLC & reboot the controller

Also for better QoS, tag management interface & make the native vlan between WLC & switch different to the management interface vlan. (ie if vlan 18 is the mgt, then tag it to 18 at the WLC & change the native vlan form 18 to something else)

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

Thanks.

LAG is actually enabled, the interface summary was copied before enabling it.

Does the sequence matter, should i be configuring Port channel first on the switches & then enable LAG on the controllers?

Tried with both pagp & lacp, the channel stays at suspended (I) mode. The etherchannel configuration is given above.

Interface Name                   Port Vlan Id  IP Address      Type    Ap Mgr Guest

-------------------------------- ---- -------- --------------- ------- ------ -----

user                             LAG  11       10.40.11.23     Dynamic No     No

svcs                              LAG  14        10.40.14.30      Dynamic No     No

management                       LAG  untagged 10.40.18.5      Static  Yes    No

redundancy-management            LAG  untagged 10.40.18.7      Static  No     No

redundancy-port                  -    untagged 169.254.18.17    Static  No     No

service-port                     N/A  N/A      192.168.100.1  Static  No     No

virtual                          N/A  N/A      1.1.1.1         Static  No     No

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

Sequence does not matter as long as you have access to both device (WLC & SW) console. As I said earlier do not try with PAgP or LACP as it won't support.

In your case you have used vlan 18 as management, allow that vlan across your trunk link.

int Po54

sw tr al vla add 18

post below output still if this is not working.

SW: show etherchannel summary

WLC: show interface detailed management

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

Thanks.

So should the configs look like this;

Turn on LAG on primary controller ( as both are in AP SSO ) & configure port channels on the switch

int Po54

des 5508-1

swi tru encap dot1q

sw tru nati vla 18

sw tru allow vla 14,37,18

sw mode tru

int gi1/0/12

swi tru encap dot1q

sw tru nati vla 18

sw tru allow vla 14,37,18

sw mode tru

chann-gr 54 mode on

int gi1/0/13

swi tru encap dot1q

sw tru nati vla 18

sw tru allow vla 14,37,18

sw mode tru

chann-gr 54 mode on

We tried this way earlier ( without vlan 18 added to the trunk list ) & the channel remains in I(standalone) mode on the switch side.

If we disable SSO & connect one controller to switch, it works.

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

You did reboot the WLC after you set the mode to LAG correct?

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

yes, the WLC rebooted after enabling LAG mode on primary

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

How about the HA? You should console into the HA and see if it's also set to LAG.

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

How do we set the HA to LAG, i only enabled LAG on the primary controller using the "config lag enable" command & then the wlc went for a reboot.

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

Just make sure the HA pair has the same config. You should be able to console into the HA pair and check.

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

Alright, so that means i need to ensure the secondary is also enabled with LAG. If not can i explicitly enable LAG on it?

I'm guessing you should, but with AP SSO, you might have to disable AP SSO and make the change.

Thanks,

Re: port bundling in controller & switch

Thanks, yes LAG is enabled on secondary controller also.

Since this is a two controller setup, should both the controllers be connected to their individual switch ends first and then LAG enabled?

Just asking from the AP SSO perspective, should both the pair of etherchannel interfaces be up before wlc is put in sso mode.
