Recommended number of WLAN for wireless voice

Hi,

I am wondering what is the recommended number of WLANs you can have for voice over wireless, as i know more SSIDs = more air time used and congestion.

Thanks

Hi,

Each AP can broadcast a maximum of 16 SSID and nothing more.  You can configure a WLC with more than 16 SSID.

Keep in mind these points

More SSIDs means more management traffic, more airtime consumed and more potential spectrum congestion.

So try to use minimum WLANs.(Not more then 16)

Thanks for the reply Sandeep =)

I remember reading in a Cisco document somewhere that there is a recommended number of WLANs when running VoWLAN but i can't seem to track it down...

Its all depends on your requirement:

Re: Recommended number of WLAN for wireless voice

Koevi,

The recommended for many vendors is to keep the number of SSIDs down to 3-4 or less. If you can keep it down to 2-3, even better.

Re: Recommended number of WLAN for wireless voice

ONE, do not create multiple SSID for according to its functionality (voice, data, etc) if SSID is used by same user group. I will keep single SSID for all of these. Also user will use single device (BYOD) for all of these functionality (voice, data, video) & difficult to have seperate SSID any longer (old days cisco recommend seperate SSID for voice where all 7925 phones connect)

Typically you would have different SSID for Guest as user group would be different & typically you need to give internet access & nothing else.

Below post should give you a clear idea how much overhead it will add when you creating multiple SSIDs

Thanks Rasika,

That calculator is quite helpful in getting an idea of how much congestion X amount of SSIDs create.
