Reset to factory default doesn't work on 1142 AP

Adrian Mihailov

Dear All,

We have an AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9  deployed in a H-REAP setup.

This AP already got the configuration from the WLC when it was deployed at a remote site.

Now we moved it to another site, but it doesn't appear in the WCS and i don't see any CAPWAP debug messages on the WLC.

The routing work fine between the AP and the WLC, the AP also gets an IP address from DHCP and also received Option 43 information.

Now my guess was that the AP doesn't associate with the WLC because it has the old config file and it runs in local mode(without trying to connect to the WLC).

We want to reset to factory defaults because we want to delete the configuration and force the AP to get a new config from the WCS.

I don't know the enable password so i had to use other methods for reseting to factory defaults.

I tried to use the information from here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/12.4_21a_JA1/configuration/guide/scg12421aJA1-chap22-trouble.html#wp1058433

I used the "MODE button":

I get the following message from the console:

"button pressed for 5 seconds

process_config_recovery: set IP address and config to default 10.0.0.1

"
But after the reboot the config is not reset, because the AP still has the same hostname and i also get error messages when the AP reads the configuration:
ip ssh version 2
    ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
transport input ssh
                 ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
aaa new-model
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
Next thing i tried was to use the CLI and to delete the config files from the boot loader mode.
But in this case, after reaching the "ap:" prompt and entering the "dir flash:" command, i don't see the file name "config.text".
This file should hold the config and it should be renamed, but how can i rename it if it's not there ?
Can someone tell me a working procedure on how to reset the AP to factory defaults?
You can see attached a log from Putty, after i used the MODE button to delete the config.
Thanks in advance,
Adrian

Thanks!! This little piece of info helped me out a great deal.

Wanted to add something I noticed.....if you do the delete then do a reload.... it will write an event.log file containing your username so after reboot you would want to delete flash:/event.log to clear any form of your username for security purposes.

Just found an autonomous IOS 1240 with a valid config and I rebooted the AP to run the  "rcv" file.  Because it previously had a statically-assigned IP address, the IP address remained and I couldn't log in because I did not clear the config before the "rcv" boot.

What I did to fix this is to load the autonomous IOS using the "mode button", cleared the config and copied the "rcv" file back.

Hi all,

I have also the same problem,

private-multiple-fs file is deleted on flash. But it's be genereated automaticaly when AP is startup.

I have all tryed that have been described above. Help plz. Ik have to do to default factory

Hi,

simple, delete everything on the Flash...start with new image..and you have DHCP 43, it should join automatically.

Hi Yahya,

Thanks for your answerd. That is my problem. Beacuse i cant download image.

I must first backup current image to tftp server.

but configure terminal not working.

If i am delete image, than i have bigger problem.

I would consider opening a TAC case, it will be solved in 10 minutes.

I do not have to access the TAC Service.

You can reset your Aironet 1142N to factory default by 2 methods

The first method is to remove the power (adapter or the ethernet adapter when the device get its power by PoE)

Press the mode button and reconnect the power. Hold the mode button for at least 2 seconds when its powering on.

The second method is by the CLI (Telnet or Console port) in enable mode execute the following commands

write erase

reload (and confirm)

The second method is by the CLI (Telnet or Console port) in enable mode execute the following commands

write erase

reload (and confirm)

If you use only "write erase", the static IP address remains.

If you want to delete everything, including IP address, you have to use the command "write default-config".

Your right

Hold the reset button down with the AP powered on. Then unplug the power form the Ap while continuing to hold the button down. Then plug the power back in, still holding the reset button. The lights will flash on the AP. When it is blue, release the rest button. Hope that helps.

Hi,

Three easy steps to Reset Cisco AP using MODE button:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmZZ2BNGXQH1HPS3uIVnr7A?sub_confirmation=1

https://youtu.be/eGCnTWBEpp8

Step 1: Disconnect power (the power jack for external power or the Ethernet cable for in-line power) from the access point.
Step 2: Press and hold the MODE button while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 3: Hold the MODE button until the Status LED turns amber (approximately 10 to 12 seconds), and release the Button. All access point settings return to factory defaults.
