SNTP-3-FATAL_ERROR_OCCURED

I'm not sure when it started, possibly when i upgraded to the 7.5 wlc code but on my 5508 my message log is getting spammed with

*sntpReceiveTask: Jan 21 09:57:06.309: #SNTP-3-FATAL_ERROR_OCCURED: sntp_main.c:233 Fatal error: : socket index (2) out of range or not open (socket.c:403).

*sntpReceiveTask: Jan 21 09:57:06.309: #SNTP-3-FATAL_ERROR_OCCURED: sntp_main.c:233 Fatal error: : unable to send NTP packet to %s ::ffff:69.167.160.102.

the ip 69.167.160.102 was the 3rd ntp server listed under controller -> ntp so for a test i deleted it. But now it's spamming the same message about the 2nd server in my list.

There doesn't seem to be much to the ntp config so I'm not sure where to go to stop this

Thanks for any help

SNTP-3-FATAL_ERROR_OCCURED

I have not seen that and I have clients with multiple NTP servers listed.  What code did you upgrade from?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Guys,

Hi Guys,

I have the same issue with a 5508 and a syslog server showing the following message:

"DW2WLC01.SYS: *sntpReceiveTask: #SNTP-3-FATAL_ERROR_OCCURED: sntp_main.c:233 Fatal error: : unable to send NTP packet to ::ffff:172.23.254.89."

IPv6 is already disabled.

Any other possible suggestion?

Thank you.

I have been studying for my CCNA Wireless, and just today configured my WLC 2504 to use my syslog server. I have seen the cascading errors you are talking about. In about 5 min, I had 75 pages of logs....

What I did to stop this, believe it or not, after trying the disabling of IPv6 which didn't help, I simply deleted all my defined NTP servers, and recreated one. This stopped the logs for now.

It is my belief this is still an issue, my wlc was bought NIB, and has the latest 7.6 image on it... I checked Cisco bug tool and found nothing for this, anyway fixed it on my wlc, hopefully this will help some else that is having the same issue.

I had the same issue on a 2504 controller, running 8.0.120.0

My problem was solved after clearing server index 1, via the cli:

(Cisco Controller) >config time ntp server 1 0.0.0.0

After clearing server index 1, i could re-use the index ( it was not usable before)

Hope this helps.

Re: SNTP-3-FATAL_ERROR_OCCURED

unable to send NTP packet to %s ::ffff:69.167.160.102.

It's looks like WLC trying to send NTP packets to IPv6 address & that fails.  If you are not using IPv6 then disable it globally on your WLC & see if that helps

(WLC) >config ipv6 disable

(WLC) >show ipv6 summary
