To supress interference from electrical loads

We are designing a Wireless solution for a hospital. Doctors and support staff would be using PDA and handhelds to feed data about patient on central data base server. We are planning to deploy celing mounted antennas which in turn will get connected to LAN.

Now the problem is ther is a Lab which has instrumnets having electrical loads as wel las microwave ovens. We wanted to get the suggestion from forum members as to how to minimize or supress the interference from these loads to wireless PDAs? We have an idea of planting wiremesh made up of segments of 1/4th wavelength of 802.11b signals into the walls as well as celining and floor surrounding the laboratory room and then provide gorunding to this wiremesh.

We would like to have feed back from the forum members to this solution. Also we are open to any other good solution which will serve the purpose.

Wire mesh should work. The thicker the wire the better, and the holes just have to be less than 1/4 wavelength, so any metallic mesh should work.

I have not thought that electrical loads would present a real problem to 802.11b? Is there evidence of this being a problem?

Similarly for microwave ovens, I understand that there is no histroy of actual significant leakage even as an oven becomes 'old and worn'.

The mesh is quite an expense, how about putting mesh around the source such as microwave oven (assuming one confirms it is in fact a RF source).

If exterior RF is a problem, such as off-site 2.4GHz band signals, consider placing an RF shield in the building exterior walls thereby protecting the WLAN for the entire building interior.



Is sounds like the WLAN is not being used for life-critical communication, but is a link to a database that presumably is not time critical.
