Upgrading WCS

Hello, I am looking to upgrade my WCS from 4.2.110.0 to 5.1.65 for MSE support.

I backed up the database before uninstalling 4.2.110. I installed the 5.1.65 version of WCS. I restored the database file I backed up previously. However, the restore appears to fail with a message indicating a version incompatibility.

So my question is, how can I upgrade and maintain my WCS configuration and database? Is this even possible with these versions or will I have to configure everything from scratch?

Regards

Chuck

Re: Upgrading WCS

Hi,

Your upgrade path is wrong: 4.2.110.0 was released after 5.1.65.0, and hence your restore is failing.

Please consider upgrading from 4.2.110.0 to any newer version, that will be any 5.2.x or later version released after 29/Sep/2008.

You have the list of versions here with the release notes:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6305/prod_release_notes_list.html

Do avoid in any case 5.1.x for WCS.

I recommend you 6.0.132.0 or 5.2.148.0.

In those cases, you can just install 5.2.148.0 or 6.0.132.0 over your 4.2.110.0 and the database will be restored successfully.

That should fix your issue.

Re: Upgrading WCS

Hi Lucien,

I totally agree with your assessment to avoid the 5.1 release for WCS :) +5 points for this my friend!

But you can see why Chuck may find this confusing (I know I do) as both these references seem to support this Upgrade path.

Upgrading to a New Software Release

The Cisco WCS release must be the same or more recent than the controller software release. Upgrade the Cisco WCS first to prevent any unexpected problems. Cisco WCS supports database upgrades only from the following official Cisco WCS releases:

•4.2.62.11

•4.2.81.0

•4.2.97.0

•** 4.2.110.0

•5.0.72.0

•5.1.64.0

Maybe I'm missing something here, which wouldn't be the first (or last) time ;-)

Re: Upgrading WCS

5.1.65.4 is OK as released after 4.2.110.0 but NOT 5.1.65 (which is 5.1.65.0).

The release notes are correct, it was not clear that 5.1.65.4 was the version mentioned earlier, I assumed it was 5.1.65.0.

In any cases the release notes are correct, I have put quite some effort to get them updated and straighten up.

Re: Upgrading WCS

Thank you. I just upgraded without issue to WCS version 5.2.148. So I have 4.2.130 on my WLCs and 5.1.30 on my MSE. This combination seems supported according to MSE documentation. Thanks for your assistance.

Re: Upgrading WCS

Hi Lucien,

I see what you mean here :) I assumed 5.1.65.4 when your reference was for 5.1.65.0, makes perfect sense now my friend! +5 points for your kind follow-up and for ensuring these release notes are always accurate. They are surely some of the BEST on CCO.

Cheers!

Re: Upgrading WCS

Thanks. I figured it was something like this. My main reason for upgrading is that I need to support the MSE, but I can't move the controllers off of 4.2.x because I have 1000 series APs, which don't support 5.x and above. So I need a WCS version compatable with 4.2 WLC code. The MSE docs note 5.1.x or above. So, I'll look to upgrade to 5.2.x and let you know how I make out.

Thank you both for your replies. Very helpful.
