Very Low Bandwidth on AIR-CAP1602 FlexConnect Local and vWLC

Hello,

I am having some hard time with the bandwidth on the Access Points managed by the vWLC. The WAN link we have is 80Mbps but the download speed measured on the laptop connected to one of the APs shows less than 1Mbps, usually 0.20Mbps, Internet browsing is not even possible with this speed. The wireless card on the laptop (Windows machine) shows the connection speed anything between 60 to 140Mbps.

The APs are configured with FlexConnect mode becasue teh vWLC is on the remote site.

Anybody had a similar problem? How could I start troubleshooting it?

Hi Remi,

Does your WLAN configured for FlexConnect Local Switching or Central Switching ? I hope it is local switching.

I would check the following

1. Data Rates configured in 802.11a/n & 802.11b/g/n bands. I would disable all data rates below 12Mbps

2. Under WLAN security set to WPA2/AES

3. Under WLAN QoS WMM settings "Required" or "Allow"

Attached your "show wlan output & "show client detail " output to check

Thanks for responding to my post. Answering your questions yes I have all the WLANs configured for FlexConnect with local switching. Also have 2 Flex Connect groups as I have 2 remote locations with APs.

On all WLANs I had WPA2 with AES and TKIP enable so I disabled TKIP.

Disabled all the rates below 12Mbps on 802.11a/n & 802.11b/g/n bands.

WLAN QoS WMM settings were on Allow by default.

If you disabled the low data rates & TKIP after my first response, do the same performance testing & measure the throughput you are getting.

Have you used iperf application for performance testing ? If so I would suggest to do iperf testing using wireless client at branch & one of the server at your main office. See the upload & download speed you will get.

I will give you some references later if you are not familiar with this process

Thanks a lot! If fact the vWLC is in the cloud with no local APs, only 2 remote locations (schools) with 76 APs in total. All VPNend. I did the changes however I will be able to run the test onsite on Monday. I did use the iperf in the past however I might need to get back to you. As of now we were simply testing the download speed with speedtest.net.

No problem. It's been a while since I had this problem but I think what I did was to disable low data rates no both 802.11a/n and 802.11b/g/n radios - everything below 12Mbps and played with the roaming. I had quite high desinty of the APs over quite small area and therefore the minimum RSSI I set to -50dBm. This way the clients did not stay connected to an AP that was far away but roamed to the closest AP. This was mainly causing the low bandwidth.

Please check if the version is it the version issue.

In Release 7.3, the bandwidth  contract feature was enhanced so that rate limits  can be defined on  both upstream and downstream traffic. Rate limits could be  defined per  SSID and/or specified as a maximum rate limit for all clients. These   rate limits could be individually configured. This feature was supported  on the  following APs: AP1140, AP1040, AP3500, AP3600, AP1250, and  AP1260. In centrally  switched WLANs, the downstream traffic is rate  limited by the controller and the  upstream is rate limited by the APs.  In local switched WLANs, both upstream and  downstream are traffic are  rate limited by the APs.

In Release 7.4, this feature is also supported on  AP1600.

Thanks for the info. The vWLC version I am running on is 7.4.110.0 (the AssureWare). I will look at the rate limits at the SSID level tomorrow morning.

I would test using iperf/jperf like Rasika mentioned. Test within your network and I would also run a traceroute to see what path local or centrally switching is taking out to the internet.

When you say very low bandwidth, how is the internal traffic... File transfers from site to site, etc?
