Why doesn't 1220B AP support 128bit WEP?

I've been searching two days for an answer to this problem and I have come up blank.

I just received a 1220B access point (use to be VxWorks based

but has been "upgraded" to Cisco IOS.) I can get it working

in open/non-encrypted mode. I can get it working with 40bit

WEP mandatory but I can't get it to work with any 802.11b clients when

WEP is mandatory and the key size is set to 128bit.

Why can't I get 128bit WEP working?

This is the case whether or not I have the Airnet Extensions turned on or off.

This is the case whether I have the ethernet connected to something or not.

I'ld like to think I'm not an idiot and I have my keys correct.

I've used "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" on both

the 1200 AP and on a linux laptop and on a windows XP client.

None of them can connect. I see authenticated messages on the

access point but nothing can communicate. (And I'm probably

not an idiot because I had 128Bit WEP working for these

clients with a Linksys wireless access point.)

The 1200's setup is brain dead basic:

1) Factory reset device

2) Turn WEP to mandatory

3) Change transmit key to 1

4) enter only the 26 hexadecimal characters for the WEP key

number 1.

Now no clients can connect and pass traffic.

I'm suppose to be able to get support from Cisco for this

product since it is still under warranty but alas, as is

usually the case for Cisco products, I can't find the

number to call; they've done a really good job hiding that

number.

Oh online documentation you say? Its out of data so if you

think its a good idea to point toward the "How to configure

WEP" document then I think you should take a second thought

because not a single dialog or command that is present in

that document matches the newer IOS interface/pages.

Please can somebody point me in the right direction with this

thing because its been nothing but a disappointing headache

for me so far.

Look over this URL that is the most current for setting up WEP. It is specific to the Cisco IOS Software for the APs.

Re: Why doesn't 1220B AP support 128bit WEP?

It may have to do with the coding of the key characters you enter. Some products ask for ASCII, others for HEX and some allow you to selct the format. Verify the same coding on Acces Point and Mobile Unit. Regards Rolf
