Wireless communication w/o Access Point

Hello to the wireless discussion area!

I was told that (in example) two laptop pc's on having wireless enabled can speak directly to eachother without the use of an AP to transfer the data. They are connected using that access point except data is sent directly from one laptop pc to the other.

I do not understand how that is possible unless specifically set to AD-HOC mode.

I was told that once connected to an access-point, the laptop pc's would be able to ping eachother from their wireless equipment and not send the ICMP/Ping or what-not, thru the AP.

Can someone help me understand this or a link that I could read.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

It is Ad-Hoc.  If there's another option it's called "mental telepathy".
