WiSMs and WLAN Controllers

Hi all,

Just a simple question - what is the role of WiSMs if you already have 4400 series controllers? Do you still need to keep the controllers after setting up WiSMs on the 6500?

Thanks.

A WiSM is essentially two 150 access point controllers on a blade in the 6500. You can keep your stand alone controllers and join them to the same mobility group if you like, or you could use one as a dedicated guest controller to put in your DMZ. But assuming that you have enough capacitiy in the WiSM you could get rid of the stand alone controller(s).

Be aware that the 6500 you use for the WISM, must be running native IOS and only the last few latest IOS's have support for the WISM.

Long story short you can't just plug it into any old 6500 and expect it to work.
