WLC5520 SSO HA requirements on the switch side

Setup: 2x WLC5520 (version 8.2) in SSO HA

Question:

If a SSO HA pair connects to two switches, will these two switches need to be VSS or Stacked? What I read from Cisco documentation is that switches must be in VSS/Stack. Could anyone please confirm?

Wouldn't it work with two separate switches if you run the redundany traffic through those switches too instead of a direct cable? Or what is the reason you can't run it on separate switches?
