Hi,

We have few cisco 3500 ap's which is to be used as work group bridge. I am not very sure but i think we need the ap to be in autonomous mode to make it a work group bridge. Currently it is running lwapp/capwap image.

Is this correct, please help with suggestions.

Yes, your AP should have autonomos image to configure it as a WGB. WGB act as a client & connect via wirelessly to a network to either another autonomous AP or Lightweigth AP. Main use case is connecting  wired devices to a wireless network.

Below may help you to understand how to configure it in each scenario.

1. WGB connection to CAPWAP

http://mrncciew.com/2013/04/30/wgb-with-capwap/

2. WGB connection to Autonmous AP

This was the summary of the issue you had

- AP was having mesh image & keep resetting. Assigning IP to Gig0 or BVI did not work to communicate with directly connected PC

- Since you did not have a WLC we could not get it convert to local mode AP & then try TFTP upload method.

- Left us only option of loading the autonomous image using MODE button & TFTP server.

Here is the summary of what we have done.

1. Download the IOS image you want to upload (ap3g1-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA2.tar) to AP

2. Rename it as "ap3g1-k9w7-tar.default"

3. Assigned your TFTP server IP (PC directly connected to AP Gig 0) from the range of 10.0.0.2 - 10.0.0.30/8 & gateway 10.0.0.1

4. Disconnect the power to AP & Reconnect Power while holding the MODE button.

5. Release the mode button after 20-30s,(after LED status turn RED)

6. After this point, AP has downloaded the given image from TFTP server & deleted the previous images from flash.

7. AP reboots with the Autonomous image.

Here is the reference doc we were used.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918

Try to follow the same procedure for any other 3502s you have (if it has mesh image & you do not have WLC to convert it to local mode AP)

Hope that was useful to you.

Does that mean the ap's need to be running on an autonomous image for it to act as workgroup bridge?

Yes... WGB is a feature in autonoous image and not a feature in a lightweight image.

You can assign it to Gig 0 interface after issueing " debug capwap console cli" command. Refer below link for full conversion detail

Thanks all. our AP 3500 is having a BVI interface along with normal radio & gig0 interfaces.

We tried using an IP address in same subnet on gig0 interface which is connected to our workstation( in same subnet ).

But, neither of them can ping each other, the firewall on workstation is turned off.

Please suggest on this. Thank You

Try setting default gateway address of your ap as laptop IP address and see. "Capwap ap ip default-gateway x.x.x.x"

Thanks we tried that.

AP gig0 was set with ip 192.168.1.2 and the workstation was set to 192.168.1.55. Both were connected using a direct ethernet cable.

either of them couldn't ping the other.

kindly advise.

Ok, let's put AP to its default config & try this again. Follow the below & see if that helps

LAP#delete flash:private-multiple-fs

LAP#reload

This will default your AP config & username/password would be cisco/Cisco afterwords.

LAP#debug capwap console cli

LAP#conf t

LAP(config)#int g0

LAP(config-if)#ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0

LAP(config-if)#no shut

LAP(config) ip default-gateway 192.168.1.55

Configure your Laptop with 192.168.1.55/24 & gateway address 192.168.1.2 & see whether it can ping each other.

Thanks.

We tried this also, but it doesn't work.

AP - 192.168.1.2

PC - 192.168.1.55

They still can't ping each other. We see an ip address on the BVI1 interface of AP. is this the problem?

Appreciate your advise on this.

That looks odd, from where this DHCP IP come to BVI interface. I am assuming you powering this AP from power adapter & AP Gig0 is directly connecting to PC

anyway try to remove this IP from the BVI

debug capwap console cli

int bvi1

no ip add dhcp

See wether it helps to ping your PC from AP

If no luck, try to assign 192.168.1.2 IP to BVI interfae instead of Gig0 & see if that helps
