I am trying to setup a 7940 to use from my house. I image I have to configure some kind of VPN back to my office. I have Call Manager 7.1.3. Can somebody point me in the right direction in terms of the proper terminology this is called and where to find info on how to accomplish this.

Hi,

With the 7940 you can either get a broadband router that can do site to site VPN and link that to the office router or you can use Phone Proxy feature.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/configuration/guide/unified_comm.html#wp1144829

This does not need a site to site VPN but does need a Cisco ASA at the other end with the appropriate licenses. It is also limited in that only media and signalling are supported - not services such as directories etc.

More modern phones such as the 7942/7945/7962/7965 do support the IP Phone VPN feature which is better than Phone Proxy as it encrypts all traffic from the phone rather than just media and signalling. This also needs an ASA and the appropriate licenses.

Alternatively if you already have an ASA you can use the Phone Proxy feature:

i do not have an ASA, let me run another setup by you guys same idea though.

I have a remote site thats connected via MPLS, they do not have a sub. How can I just drop a phone in via MPLS?

If the phone is on the same IP network as the CUCM servers, gateways etc. then it should work fine at home. You may need to statically configure the TFTP server addresses which are normally obtained via DHCP option 150 but other than that (and powering the phone as you are unlikely to have PoE at home) you should be good to go.

You may want to configure CUCM so that the phone uses G.729 rather than G.711 if bandwidth is limited.
