7942 Not Able to Configure/Register IP

So I cannot figure this one out for the life of me.

My network is running all 7942 phones and has been. I have three EWS 520 PoE Switches that manage the phones along with a UC560 w/FXO. I have been running this with no problems. All of a sudden, two of my newest additions are not working. When the phones are plugged in they will pull power and startup but them will sit on either the Configuring IP or Registering screen. Both phones experiencing this problem are on the same switch. If I move either of those phone to another switch, they work fine. If I take a phone that is working from another switch and plug it in to one of these phones ports, it doesnt work and does the same thing.

All three switches are exactly the same, so no difference there.

I have checked the port configurations and they are all fine. Smart Ports are looking for an IP Phone. I have tried deleting the phones from CCA and re adding them, no go. I've tried using a static IP on the phones, didn't work. If I plug a PC into the output on the phone it gets an IP and internet and is assigned to the appropriate VLAN.

No other phone on this system are experiencing this problem. All cables have been tested and are good.

Help?

Hi Matthew,

Are the phones getting IPs from the voice DHCP pool? I think there is a configuration issue on the smart ports so the voice vlan applied to the phones is not correct. In the phone's network configuration you can see the operational VLAN (you can check it in the phone's web too), this is the VLAN received from the switch.

BR

Our phones are setup to get their IP's via DHCP from the voice pool yes. The phone pool is 10.1.1.x /24 and is in VLAN 100, the PC's connected through the phones are on the 10.0.1.x /24 network and are on VLAN 1 . At least thats how it is supposed to be and is setup in both CCA and our other phones. On one of the phones that is not registering the ip address is 10.1.1.49 /24 and Operational VLAN 100 which should be correct that's why I don't understand the issue. This phone just site on the registering screen for a while then clears out and goes back to configuring ip then registering then repeats.

Thanks for your help

That seems to be a switch issue but, could you confirm with a debug ephone register that the UC560 doesn't receive any registration from the devices?

hereare the phones having problmes from the show ephone command

Hi Matthew,

The phones are deceased. When I have this problem I use to delete the phones and create them another time with a different tag (but I think this is not the problem in this case).

     Try this:

1.- Disconnect the phones that can't be registered

2.- Type in the UC560: debug ephone register

3.- Type in the UC560: term mon

4.- Connect one of the phone disconnected in 1

5.- Paste the output (if there is any output )

I am getting alot of these:

gabitEthernet0/0, changed state to up

725451: Feb  3 16:15:09.806: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to down

725452: Feb  3 16:15:12.814: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to up

725453: Feb  3 16:15:19.834: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to down

725454: Feb  3 16:15:22.842: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to up

725455: Feb  3 16:15:29.834: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to down

725456: Feb  3 16:15:32.842: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to up

725457: Feb  3 16:15:39.834: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to down

725458: Feb  3 16:15:42.842: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to up

725459: Feb  3 16:15:49.834: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to down

So I cannot see if there is anything from the phone. (Time it takes for me to walk to phone location and walk back makes the screen move up too much) How can I turn off this reporting? -Sorry.....

Hi Matthew,

You can turn off the debug and the monitor using these commands:

    term no mon

    undeb all

Your Gi0/0 is flapping . If there are no other messages in the output, the phones can't connect with the UC560. The problem is in the switch, maybe it's not tagging the voice vlan or something like that... Did you reload the switch?

Ok, turned off all debugging and plugged in... defnitely no response when the phone powered on.

Aside from doing a reload, is there anything else you can think of to check until I can do a reload?

Thank you!

Thanks for that command... I coun't figure it out! Ha.

I did not see any other items listed... and I have not reloaded the switch because I am in a live environment and need to wait till end of business day so as to not affect the other employees. I will try it and see what happens.

Thanks!

Before rebooting I would at least hard set a port on the new switch into vlan 100 and check if u can ping the uc, by plugging in a Laptop into that access port

Hi there,

Its seems to be a CDP issue which CDP version you are using on switch ports.?

match result  for both switches  by "sh cdp".

OR

Verify CDP is enable   if yes then Enable CDP V2  see the result.

Regards,

Sibrahim
