7970 does not load firmware

Hi everybody,

I have switched a 7970 from SCCP to SIP an upgraded successfully to 8.4.1 SR2. After that a hard reset 3491672580*# was done. Since then the phone is not able to load any of the firmwares provided by the tftp server to upgrade further. I can see that the phone has the IP 192.168.1.2 and is answering when I send pings. Is there anybody who can tell me what I exactly have to insert into the tftp server fields when the phone is directly connected to the lan port of the pc in order to get the phone running again. Thanks in advance!

Hi @HH-Film-e.K.,

Can you provide the running-config (attach it as a .txt file)?

Hi Martin,

thank you very much for the quick answer! All I have are the files needed for the upgrade - see here:files

I do not have any config file. For all performed upgrades I did not need any config file. If you can support me with one that I need, I would be very glad.

Some additional information: the phone boots, and the screen stays black. In the server log I can see  this:

and

192.168.1.3 is the IP of my LAN port which is on DHCP as well. As you can see, the phone has an IP but does not do anything. I am also not sure what to do with option 66 or 150 in the DCHP server setting. Is it possible that the phone is dead in means of the firmware was not loaded correctly and now it is not pssible to get it out of this state?

to summarize:

  • I am not sure what kind of settings I have to do in the DHCP/TFTP (IP addresses etc.)
  • I do not have any config.xml or .cnf file
  • all updates were done with only the files given by cisco (see first picture)
  • the last running state was with sip8.4.1SR2 - bootet
  • after a following hard reset the actual state was observed

Best regards

Matthew

You have forgotten to upload the pictures.

Are you using CME or CUCM?

I do not use either software. I am not able to download either software. My serial number will be rejected. I already talked to your support team. Hence I alternatively have to use other software. I did not have any pictures in the tftp server directory and the phone upgraded successfully 4 times to higher versions.

Attached you will find 2 screenshots of wireshark which observes the lan traffic. As you can see on the screenshots the phone is booting and sending information, but I have to correct myself, it does not have any IP address.

HI @,

To respond some of your doubts:

  • I am not sure what kind of settings I have to do in the DHCP/TFTP (IP addresses etc.)
    • You have to make sure to put Option 150 as the IP address of the TFTP server. Without this the Phone won't know where to get its configuration files
  • I do not have any config.xml or .cnf file
    • You can get the .cnf and .loads file from Cisco and then add them to a folder in the TFTP server

Also:

  • What TFTP server are you using?

Rgrds,

Thanks, Martin!

I am using TFTP32 by Philippe Jounin. I don´t think that I will need the .cnf file at all. All files that are provided by cisco are the ones you see on the very first screenshot. I downloaded them from the cisco page. I successfully upgraded the phone by only using these few files, without any dial plans, pictures, cnf-file etc. Can you perhaps give me a short report what could be with my phone. Do you think that it is totally bricked and not recoverable without having special tools or flashing equipment to reload some files onto the phone? For me it seems like the phone has a corrupted firmware on it and forgot IP and what to look for. Attached you will find some .cnf

Today I started another approach with a cross wired cable. Sometimes the TFTP log says that a request is done for IP 0.0.0.76 but I cannot insert such IP ranges into the TFTP software.

Best regards

Matthew
