There is no key sequence (currently) that can be used to put the 7970 into "Sleep Mode". You can tweak the "Display Idle Timeout" time way down so that the phone goes into "Sleep Mode" quickly when not in use but that's about as good as it gets.
Sorry about that :) There are similar commands for CME shown in the attached doc. You should be able to play with these to come up with the ultimate "power save" mode;
