With IP networks being predominantly growing, Fax over Ip is becoming more and more common. Especially with the robust capabilities that Cisco IOS has to offer, fax over IP is the solution to go for.
The main advantages that strikes out :
1. Cost savings
2. ease of routing the fax calls across the Ip network
3. Ability to connect to fax servers
4. Ability to do send the fax to email server (T.37 On ramp faxing)
You can refer to the following document for a detailed explanation of Fax over IP in general :

Also, regards to the configuration for T.37 :
here is a detailed explanation along with configuration example :
Hope this helps.. !!

The advantage is to be able to send and receive faxes over the ip network.
For the case you mentioned, no special configuration is needed.

Dear Paolo,
Thank you for your replay. Is that the only advantage, is it possible to send a soft copy of the fax to a mail box ? If possible please suggest me some configuration samples.
Best Regards,
Ullas.
