Hi,
Having Fax issues at present with an ATA, H323 Gateway running Call Manager 6.1.2.
Calls are working fine and coming in over BRI ports. Faxes can be sent outbound from site and also across the LAN and WAN.
When calls are made inbound to the ATA - a Q931 debug shows the call as alerting but the ATA does not pick up or connect the call to the Fax machine.
some config is shown below:
interface BRI0/0/0

One thing I think it may be is cabling but calls come in over the LAN and WAN...??!!
Any help, greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,
This more or less confirms what I was expecting. If you would like to change the phone load of a single ATA you can do it in the phone configuration page, without interrupting the cluster. Just put the new load in the TFTP server and reference in the text box on the IP phone page.
You can reference certain route patterns as 'OnNet' or 'OffNet', but this is going to be more disruptive as you need to reset the associated gateways and such.
It sounds like the fax machine doesn't like the external cadence. If you're using the same cable, it's not cabling. You can try adding more/less cable, as there are other issues with too much / not enough resistance on the wire.
Try calling the fax machine from an internal number and see if it picks up. If it does, it could relate to the cadence. If it doesn't, it could be voltage.

We've had some mixed problems with the distinctive ringtone feature of the ATA. External calls will ring differently than internal. The problem is, the internal ringtone is the 'normal' US ringtone and the external is a slightly modified cadence.
Some fax machines do not like the modified cadence, and will not answer.
You can test this by trying an internal fax, or by changing the route pattern and CUCM parameters to make this an 'OnNet' call.
The latest SCCP load out on CCO should have a configurable cadence configuration that you can change to match the internal ring.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the quick response. Quick question - how do I make the incoming call to the call manager ring as if it is On Net?
Unfortunately I'm not in a position to upgrade the SCCP Load as the cluster supports 8 or 9 sites across Europe and would be subject to strict change controls.
We just had a Telefonica engineer turn up on site and we tested his analogue POTS Phone in the ATA and it rang. Does that prove it is cabling or a cadence issue?

Hi Nick,
All resolved now. It was the model of fax machine that was at fault. The company had Brother fax machines and once we found and configured an HP MFD - it worked fine.
Thanks for the help. I can fly home now!!

Before you takeoff, check that you've set clock off the BRI ports, that will ensure reliable fax transmission.
network-clock participate bri x/y
netwrok-clock select 1 bri x/y
