Avaya phones on Call Manager?

Let's say you have a whole Cisco setup with CUCM 7.x but you have a small number of Avaya 4600 series phones that you don't want to replace due to specific features (VPNRemote).  Is there anyway to get the Avaya phones to connect to Call Manager directly, or do you have to maintain the Avaya PBX as well and connect that to Call Manager instead?

If the phones support SIP, you can configure them as third-party SIP phones.

Anyway, the results are usually quite poor, lack of uniformity, features not working, etc.
