Avaya/Plantronics KS23822 VoIP compat?

Hi there,

One of our field offices has a number of analog phones, with older headsets. I haven't seen one in person, but the people there told me it's a "Avaya/Plantronics KS23822-L1". I think it's made by Plantronics, but sold by Avaya. Other websites seem to indicate the Avaya part number is 406741900

I checked both companies websites, and can't find much info.

Does anybody happen to know if this headset would be compatible with the Cisco 7965G? I realize it wouldn't support Headset Hookswitch Control, which is fine..just wanted to see if it'll work as it does today for them.

Hi Bill,

I have worked with a few people here who have successfully re-used Avaya/Plantronics Headsets with Cisco IP Phones. In most cases they needed to order the Plantronics Part# (26716-01)which is a Quick Disconnect cord that is compatible with phones like the 7965. These go for about US$12.

The part #s that have been supplied to you so far will not come into play in the new config;

The KS23822-L1 is a Plug-Prong Adaptor/Cord used for really "old" headset connections.

The Avaya part number is 406741900 is a re-branded Plantronics M12 Amplifier which will not be required as these IP Phones have a really nice built-in Amplifier that will connect directly to the Headset using the cord I listed above.

So the KS23822-L1 is an adapter between the M12 amplifier and their phone sets?

Sounds like what I really need to find out is which actual headsets they use to connect into the M12 amplifier?

Also, wouldn't they most likely already have the Quick Disconnect cord? It looks like the same part that goes between their headset and the M12. Then it could be re-used for the Cisco phones?

Hey Bill,

Good stuff my friend :)

1. Yes, the KS23822-L1 is an adapter between the M12 amplifier and their phone sets (usually for phones that do not have Modular Handset Cord connectors but rather "Spade Tip" hardwired connections).

2. Yes, if they could send the actual Headset model would be very helpful to flesh this out fully.

3. Yes, these would all have Quick Disconnect cords already. The funny thing is that not all Plantronics QD Cords are created equally :) The Pin Outs are different on the various Part #'s of the cords. If you could get them to send you one ahead of time you will know right away if the Plantronics Part# (26716-01) is required. The chances are pretty good they will be necessary, but if not at least you will have them for any future Corded Headsets you install.

Excellent. I've requested the headset model and I'll update as soon as I have it.

Could you give me a little background on the 7965 headset port? Does it just take a standard phone cord in? If both are connected, how does it determine if it should use the headset port or the actual handset?

Hi Bill,

The plug end on the Headset Cord is the standard quick-disconnect cord with RJ-12 (modular) adapter (same as your handset jack).

The determination between Handset/Headset is via the Headset Button on the 7965 itself.

If you have a look at this tutorial for the 7941 (sorry I don't think there is one out for the 79x5 series yet) you will see the Button described and shown quite nicely :)

Excellent, that tutorial explained it.

As for the model, apparently the headsets don't have a model number on them. But we'll give 26716-01 a try.
