backup my CUCM8.6

I tried to backup my CUCM8.6 with many free SFTP Software but it failed . I tried freeFTPd , freeSSHd and WinSSHd .

I asked  other colleagues but they told me that Unfortunately CUCM 8.6 does not support freeFTP as a backup SFTP server and I should buy GlobalSCAPE software to backup the CUCM8.6 .

That will cost me alot . Is there any free SFTP to help to backup the CUCM8.6 ?

I appreciate your support

Hi Ievalley,

Question:

What are the supported SFTP Servers to perform backup and restore?

Answer:

Make sure that Cisco Unified Communications Manager is running. In a cluster, make sure that Cisco Unified Communications Manager is running on all servers in the cluster. To back up data to a remote device on the network, you must have an SFTP server configured. The following SFTP servers are supported and recommended, but you may use any SFTP server:

•Open SSH (for Unix systems, refer to http://openssh.com)

•Cygwin (refer to http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/, or http://ipc-platform-team.cisco.com/index.cgi/DrfInfo/faq) ;

•freeFTPD (Currently not supported due to a file size limitation of 1GB)(refer to http://www.freeftpd.com/?ctt=download, or http://ipcbu-cap.cisco.com/tips/SFTP%20server.html)

•TitanFTP (http://www.webdrive.com/products/titanftp/index.html)

•In addition to the free sftp servers mentioned below, GlobalScape is the commercial SFTP Server that have been certified with Cisco through the Cisco Technology Developer Partner program (CTDP). More info refer to http://www.globalscape.com/gsftps/cisco.aspx.\\

Hope it helps.

Hi

I have been using FreeFTPD for years with all Cisco UC products, and it has worked flawlessly for me.

I don't recall running into a 1GB limit with it either.

Perhaps post up what settings you have configured, and check the logs from FreeFTPD to see if you are actually hitting the server or not.

Same here, FreeFTPD works great for me too...May be like Aaron said you need to look at your settings

I used to use freeSFTP until I started running into this limitation on large UCON message store backups, it works fine for typical backups such as CUCM DB, CUC DB, and other apps, but it definitely cannot handle large CUC Message backups.

Make sure the SFTP service is running and the user is defined, what error message are you getting?

Chris

When i try to start the FTP/SFTP service it gave me

ERROR: Generic error for access violation

Hi there,

You will need to watch for this bug which did "bite" us

CSCsm21349 - DRS Direct Backup stuck for freeFTPd server when tar size grow over 1GB

Description

Symptom:
When we try to SFTP  any file directly to the freeFTPD 1.0.11 SFTP server (taking a backup)  we are getting stuck at a stage where the file reached .99 GB size in  the SFTP location. It never grows more than 1 GB. The actual data to be  backed up is over 20 GB.
Conditions:
The folder of more  than 1 GB size is tarred (GNU tar 1.13.25) to stdout. An output stream  is created using a third party library, between stdout and the SFTP  server. The output of the tar command is directed to remote server  (freeFTPD). The JDK version used is 1.5.13 (The code is in java.). We  are performing here an uploading function.
The file transfer is  initiated successfully and the file size in this particular case is more  than 1 GB. At the stage when the file size in SFTP server has reached  .99 GB, the transfer process is stuck. The file inside the SFTP folder  never goes above .99 GB (not size on disk). The whole process works fine  when the tarred file size is less than 1GB or the SFTP is a native  Linux one or Cygwin or OpenSSH. So basically the SFTP for data greater  than 1 GB fails only for freeFTPD server.
Workaround:

All  other FTPD servers other than freeFTPd will work. Cigwin, OpenSSH,  native linux SFTP server all can be used instead of freeFTPd as a work  around.

Further Problem Description:
freeFTPd team has  informed that this is a known issue.  FreeFTPd/OpenSSHd is no longer  developed and is unsupported for DRF backups now.

Rob thanks for this great info! (+5) Didnt know freeFTPD had this 1GB issue. The question is are any of these alternatives free. What made FreeFTPD popular was that it was free and did the job. Now that is no longer doing the job, we must find the next free alternative.........

Hey Deji,

You are always welcome my good friend! You will only run into

this problem on Unity Connection "message" backups as Chris

so nicely noted. So it shouldn't come into play for CUCM.

The question I have to ask is this;

"How important are backups to the organization?"

In most cases, the answer is VERY important! If that's the

case then why not backup your investment using a product

that is supported but may cost a few dollar$? It really seems

that any CIO would support the request for this type of funding

given the alternative - no backups.

Just my two cents.

Cheers!
