Yes. It can be done.
But you won't find the process in this website. Instead, go to www.voip-info.org for complete instructions on how to convert your phone to SIP.

Hi Guys!
i've tried to follow the links you provide, but i did not find an exact guide for that model 7911, there were many suggestions, but none of them solved my case...
the last test i tried was this one in this link:
http://www.mehrdust.com/archives/cisco-ip-phones-79xx-with-asterisk
and i used the files on download here:
http://www.mehrdust.com/downloads/7911-SIP-P0S3-08-9-00.zip (on the same link is this suggesition)
but now i'm totally in trouble.
After one factory reset i did by pressing # during boot, and then 123456789*0#, the ip phone did not upgrade to firmware i tried, and now nothing is shown in its display.
THe phone pickup ip address (192.168.2.210), i could ping it from the computer that has tftp server and serves as dhcp server also, but nothing i could do with that.
i could not access the phone from webpage, and when i try to reset it again with :
option a. pressing # during boot, and then 123456789*0#,
option b. # key till the extension lights blink amber…then press 3491672850*# ( i found on this link:
http://www.adrianandgenese.com/blogger/2011/02/16/how-to-upgrade-or-convert-a-cisco-ip-79xx-7940-7960-794x-796x-797x-phone-to-sip-or-sccp/)
it is the same situation.
where i was wrong, what can i do now?
please help me. see in attach the photos
Regards
