CCM4.1(3) to 7.0(2) upgrade

I've been given the task of upgrading our servers from 4.1(3) to the latest 7.0(2) release of UCM.

I'm aware that I have to run the DMA tool on the publisher to prepare the database for the informix db.

Are there any major caveats or obstacles that I should be aware of before I begin this process?

Also, does the DMA tool capture NTP, DHCP configuration settings or do these need to be added manually within UCM7 following database restoration?

Any other tips on the upgrade process would be very much appreciated.

Obtaining Software Feature Licenses

You must obtain a software feature license after the upgrade from Cisco Unified CallManager 4.x releases. A software feature license activates features on your system for the specified license version.

Use this procedure to obtain a software feature license:

Step 1 Navigate to the License Registration web tool at http://www.cisco.com/go/license.

Step 2 Enter the Product Authorization Key (PAK) that you received with your Cisco Unified Communications Manager upgrade.

Step 3 Click Submit.

Step 4 Follow the system prompts. You must enter the MAC address of the Ethernet 0 NIC of the first node of the Cisco Unified Communications Manager cluster. You must also enter a valid e-mail address. The system sends the license file to you via e-mail using the e-mail address that you provided.

Step 5 You must upload the software license file to the server with the matching MAC address that you provided in Step 4. See the "Uploading a License File" section.

Step 6 After uploading the license file, you must obtain and upload license files for existing nodes and devices

Migrating from Cisco CallManager 4.0(x) to 7.0(x)

When you migrate from Cisco CallManager version 4.0(x) to 7.0(x), the licenses that are required for existing phones and existing Cisco CallManager nodes is calculated and an intermediate file (XML file) that contains these license counts will be generated during the Cisco CallManager migration process. These licenses are given free of cost because you are already using these phones for Cisco CallManager version 4.x. If you are provisioning new phones and nodes after migrating to Cisco CallManager 7.0(x), you need to paste the intermediate license file in the License Registration window on CCO.

Use the following procedure to register existing licenses and request for new licenses.

Step 1 In Cisco CallManager Administration, choose System > Licensing > License File Upload.

The License File Upload window displays.

Step 2 Click View File. A pop-up window displays that has the license information for existing phones and nodes. Copy this information. To copy the contents on this windrow, you can use Ctrl-A (Select All) and Ctrl-C (Copy).

Step 3 On the License Registration window of CCO website, in the text box provided, paste the file contents using Ctrl-V.

Step 4 You must enter the MAC address of the Cisco CallManager server that you are requesting the licenses for, and a valid E-mail Id.

Step 5 To obtain the actual license file, click Submit. A license file is generated.

Step 6 You must upload the license file to the server with the matching MAC address that you provided in Step 4. See the "Uploading a License file" section in the Cisco CallManager Administration Guide. This node takes on the functionality of the license manager.

Licenses Not Requiring a PAK

If you do not have a Product Authorization Key (PAK), please click here for available licenses. (use the please click here link)

Available licenses include Evaluation/Demo Licenses, Cisco ASA 3DES/AES, PIX Firewall 3DES/AES and DES Encryption, Cisco Services for IPS, and Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version Upgrade licenses.

Step 1 After you complete the Cisco Unified Communications Manager upgrade process, navigate to Cisco Unified CallManager Administration and choose System > Licensing > License File Upload.

Step 2 Choose the license XML file from the Existing Files drop-down list, and click View File. The window refreshes and displays the information for the selected license. Copy all of the information in this file except the HTML tags. To copy the contents on this window, choose the appropriate text and choose Ctrl-C (Copy).

Step 8 You can obtain licenses for new devices that you are adding to the upgraded system, if your system requires additional device license units.

Have a look at this great tip from Jason;

"when you capture the xml file for the DLUS etc after the upgrade so that you can post it on Cisco's web site, it might be wrapped in HTML. ie the first line and the last line are html, and the license utility will reject it. Remove the first and last line to resolve this."

One more question surrounding firmware.

We have around 1200+ handsets spread out across 4 sites linked by 10Meg ethernet LAN extension circuits.

We are looking to implement these changes overnight. Is it feasible to expect all of the phones to receive an updated firmware image before business hours the next day?

Hi DL,

This is key when trying to figure out the Upgrade / Migration Maintenance window time :)

If you have 1,200 phones you may not want them all to have to go through this process at the same time you are working through the CUCM Upgrade itself.

Many people determine what the new Firmware will be on the new 7.x build and upgrade the phones (on CCM 4.1) ahead of time.

If you look at the "Device Defaults" page on both the CCM 4.1 and CUCM 7.(x) builds you will be able to see what changes are required.

I would however, expect that with the 10 meg circuits they would upgrade within a few hours. If it were me, I would do this part of the upgrade ahead of time (this is what we did during our last migration :)

You might have already guessed what my next question will be.

CUCM7 requires SCCP version 8.9 for the 7940/60's which make up the bulk of our estate. Would our CCM4.1(3) require a patch to install the 8.9 SCCP firmware or can we simply apply a device package and update the SCCP firmware load ahead of time?

I'd be interested to know how you went about this before your last migration?

Are you sure you talk about SCCP Version 8.9 ??

Is it possible that you talk about 8.0(9)?

If you talk about 8.0(9) i think you can load the firmwarefiles for your 7940/60 put them in your tftp-folder and modify your device defaults to the new version filenames.

The firmware image within the 8.0(9) install program is named P00308000900, and supports the Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) for the following Cisco IP Phone models:

This firmware version is supported on Cisco CallManager Release 5.0 and higher, and releases 4.3, 4.2, 4.1, 4.0, and 3.3.
