Cisco 2851 hardware requirements for local/outgoing calls

Hello,

I've got my hands on Cisco 2851 and created a simple VoIP network (using skinny protocol). Now I'd like connet it to outside world using the analog (FXO) line, would it be enough to insert to HWIC slot  VIC2-4FXO card? DoI need High-Density Packet Voice Digital Signal Processor Modules? Would installing a VIC-4FXS/DID card be sufficient to use a fax? If I decide to go with E1 connection to the PSTN which hardware do Ineed to purchase?

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

FXS card is a station card for analog devices, i.e. analog phone, fax, etc.  For POTS connection you will need an FXO card.  Yes, you do require PVDMs for TDM based circuits.

For E1 you will need VWIC[2]-1MFT-E1 card.

Thank you, so I need a PVDM for TDM circuits like E1, do I also need a PVDM for analog FXO channels?

You need PVDMs for all TDM based circuit, if you are going to use the E1 as PRI or E1-CAS with vs. route SIP traffic over it then you need PVDMs.

I understood that, and asking about FXO

FXO is a TDM circuit, so yet you need DSPs for any TDM, i.e. T1/E1, FXO, FXS, E&M, etc. DSPs convert the TDM to voip.

Hi Aleksandr.

It depends on what type and how may lines you have to connect to the 2851.

VIC2-4FXO allows you to connect 4 analogue PSTN lines  while with a VWIC2-2MFT-E1/T1 you can connect up to 2 E1 or T1 lines.

What you have to remember is to install the appropriate number ov PVDM to support all installed lines.

Please refer to the following doc to have an idea on which Card you can install on your 2851 and the model version.

Hi Aleksandr,

[+5} to Carlo.

HWIC cards are basically used for data where u can configure channel groups as per the available time slots each of 64K or bind them in Nx64Kbps.

you can refer the link
