cisco mcs 7800

Hi,

I am an inern recently hired by a firm. i am fairly new to the ip telephony sector. i need some help.

i have been asked to set up a test network however before i proceed with it i want to know certain basic information. I have a cisco mcs 7800 series server which is a LINUX system (a cpu) my collegue here at work told me that we can make this linux box either a call manager 6.x or a call manger 4.x as we have both those devices that can be assembled onto the CPU one at each time. in addition to this server i also hav a cisco mcs 7800 series box which looks like a router in shape and it has ethernet port as well. what i am confused with is which among these devices is the call manager. it looks like the device lookin like the router that has MCS 7800 written on it is the call manager but if that is the case then what is the linux box we have that says cisco MCS 7800 as well?

please help me i m fairly new to this and i m having a very difficult time.

MCS 7800 is a server and not a router. Callmanager 6.x runs on Linux, while Callmanager 4.x runs on windows 2000/2003. The MCS servers usually should have a teal green cisco face plate on the front.

i understand that but what i am confused with is that i have two devices one is a linux box like a cpu and one is a device shaped like a router i kno this is not a router as it has mcs 7800 mcs written on it. what i am confused is what these two devices actually do. does the linux box need to be conected to the router like shaped device having mcs 7800 written on it..

Both servers can be connected to a switch through ethernet straight through cable. Both should be two independent boxes, so should not have any relation to each other, can run as independent callmanagers.

i appreciate ur help sir, im still a little confused. if both are individual call managers which can connect to a switch then if i hav a call manager 6.x as the linux box what would be the other device that says mcs 7800, and does that mean that these two devices were seperate and do not come as a package and one can function without the other and if yes what call manager will that device be. Also could you help me find a document that i can use to configure both these call managers seperately for seperate networks... i would appreciate ur reply...thanks again

thanks rob...i will go through these docs... the only thing i dont understand is that what is this other device that says mcs 7800 series server and has a shape similar to that of a router is (i kno its not a router) i wish i could send u a picture to get a more precise reponse..still thanks for the help.

Here i hav attached the pictures here, the first device which is the linux box as i mentioned earlier looks similar to the one in the picture and the second picture is exactly of the router shaped device that i am talkin about which has mcs 7800 series server written on it.. i want to know which of these devices is a call manager and if both are what version of CCM are they and can they be used as two different devices... i hav posted the links from where i got the picture of these devices... if it helps.

Both are callmanager servers. Only way to find out is to connect them to a monitor or and see which one is linux and which one is Microsoftw windows. WIndows version should be 4.x and linux version should be either 5.x or 6.x.

IF you have ip connectivity to either boxes, you can browse to the web interface.

Thanks a lot.. i kno which one is linux and which is windows was jus confused as to if both were call managers... coz even i thought tat but sumone here at work told me that they change the hard drive to switch between a 4.x and 6.x and so i was a bit confused... i guess they did not hav the correct info...appreciate ur help thanks everyone

Can i use this call manager to process call records from a 2801 CME router???

Are you talking about Call detail recording (CDR). CME is an independent box and has its own set of CDRs. This does not sync with Callmanager although you can configure CME to export CDRs to an ftp server.

i get it, so one would use a call manager only in case of routers that do not hav the ability to provide these data records? why exactly do we use call manager? i kno i am askin pretty basic questions however these replies help me a lot coz if i try to read about all this it takes a huge amount of time and on top of that finding a required doc isnt tat easy..

Callmanager is a server based phone system solution for medium to large businesses, while Callmanager Express is a router based phone system solution for small to medium sized business. Both has its own way of recording Call detail records (CDR).
