Cisco SIP phones through a 3rd party proxy

I am trying to set up come Cisco phones using SIP to connect to a proxy server for remote access so I don't have to open my Call Manager to the internet.

I have a couple of phones registered with SIP s the protocol, but they are not trying to connect to the proxy server I put in to the Proxy Server field on the CM config page.

I am running 6.1.3 and I am trying it with a 7940 phone for now.

Is there something I am missing?

The only 79xx phone models that Cisco supports using SIP third party call control is the 7940 and 7960.

Depending on your SIP Server the Cisco Phones need the SIP Firmware and the Phone Settings need to be uploaded via a TFTP Server.
